Valedictory Address: Cape Town, November 2016

After four decades in the world oil game, and involvement across Six Continents, it was time to make a Valedictory Address to the 1,500 delegates at our world-known 23rd Africa Upstream Conference. The talk reviewed our humble beginnings, from its one-man band to the formation of our firm, Global Pacific & Partners, the quarter-century partnership with my colleague, Babette van Gessel, our early origins and ‘discovery’ of oil in Geneva, our time with Petroconsultants SA, the firm’s growth from research into advisory practice, with over 90 mandates conducted for a wide range of corporate and state clients across the world, the construct of our global portfolio of Conferences, Strategy Briefings executed, Corporate Briefings done in-house, and with over 400 presentations given at our own events. Many notable oilmen and women were met on this journey across the world in our firm’s engagements, via Private Clubs and social programs, while our Daily News distributed on worldwide oil for 17 years led to the provision of over one million stories gratis to our far-flung clients in Africa, Asia, Latin America, United States, Canada, the MidEast and Europe. Over one quarter-million users were beneficiaries of our website, petro21.com, utilised across 180 countries over this time, while over 25,000 were on our global client senior management database, Galilieo. Our firm conducted 224 Conferences, 169 Strategy Briefings, 55 Corporate Briefings and 22 Government Roadshows, with 140 events held by our PetroAfricanus Club and related Clubs in its lifespan: 610 events in all, with 200 in and on Africa. The firm was the leader in the day for state licensing programs. In the last decade or so of our time, four books were published and two documentaries were scripted and produced for television, while the firm was founder of both the PetroAfricanus Club - plus related equivalent entities on Asia and Latin America - and the Co-founder of the African Institute of Petroleum. It pioneered Awards from 1996 in Africa, Asia, Latin America and for Women, with 175 recipients so recognised, notably for the ‘Big Five’ in Africa and ‘Oil Legends’ in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Long term industry relationships were built and sustained with private and public industry associations across all continents. It founded the Global Women & Petroleum Club in 2001, and Young Professionals in Oil & Gas, both led by Babette van Gessel, and it conducted the first published research on women in world oil, gas and energy. Well over fifty thousand individuals were met on this ‘long safari’, many of them outstanding players across the world oil game.

The Valedictory Presentation, Adieu Africa, is shown here.
